Vol 1213 Issue 27

Cali Cocina - A New Way to Dine on Campus!

The Forty-Niner Shops is proud to welcome students and staff to its newest dining location, Cali Cocina. This new grill features traditional favorites from Mexico with a modern, California influence.

The restaurant, which is located in the University Dining Plaza (UDP), opens just in time for the beginning of the Fall semester on August 26.

The Head Chef and Manager, our talented Victor Sevillano, has created a tasty menu of fresh, flavorful foods that everyone is sure to enjoy. Diners can order dishes ranging from the fun, over-the-top options like the California Burrito or Asada Tater Tots to the simpler fare, such as cheese quesadillas or a chopped salad.

And you can get creative with your cuisine! When ordering at the counter, the open display of food shows customers a selection of carnitas, fish, steak, barbacoa, grilled chicken, or vegetarian fajitas. As they prepare your taco, burrito bowl or salad, you can choose from the selection of brown or Spanish rice, tasty black or pinto beans, and a variety of crisp, juicy vegetables.

If you’re excited to try the newest, freshest food around, then visit the UDP and look for Cali Cocina in the corner, next to Panda Express.

Affordable Textbooks for All!

Did you know that our 49er Shops Bookstore is striving to provide affordable textbooks for all students? This year before you buy, take the time to look at all the options we have available!

Our most popular option would have to be textbook rentals. With such a large selection available this program has saved students over $1 million in just the past year! For those looking to purchase textbooks, our Textbook Department has made a great effort to find used textbooks from across the nation. Additionally, we also offer a Price Match Guarantee program. If a textbook is available for a lower price at another online bookstore, they will match the price – guaranteed!

Looking for the least expensive option for a new text? Then check out our the loose-leaf textbooks. And students can still sell back these books at the end of the semester. Another low cost and easy alternative are E-books. These convenient – and lightweight – options also happen to be approximately half the price of regular textbooks!

If you are looking for an affordable way to purchase your textbooks for the semester, visit the Bookstore’s online ordering page at shopthebeach.com to view price comparisons. If you have any questions please talk to a Bookstore representative to get advice on the best alternatives for your course materials.

Safety & Wellness

Have a Good Laugh

Laughter is the Best Medicine
Have you ever noticed that laughing feels good? That’s because humor and laughter are good for you! They both make a significant contribution to your physical and mental health. Fun Fact: just 3-5 minutes of intense laughter can double your heart rate and provide the aerobic equivalent to 3 strenuous minutes on a rowing machine. Now that’s a more fun way to get a workout!

Laughter also has the convenient ability to reduce physical pain, but let’s investigate that further…When you laugh, muscles are activated that send signals to your brain. Being the super-smart organ that it is, the brain then releases endorphins – which are nature’s best built-in painkiller! So if you are in pain, you can literally just laugh it off!

Want to know some other cool benefits of laughing? It can also mobilize our body’s defenses and make us measurably happier (there is clinical evidence for this!).

Laughter to Reduce Stress
When we are stressed at work, home or school, we can become surrounded by negativity. Humor provides a healthy alternative – so turn that frown upside down! Humor can also assist in problem solving and challenging situations – so the next time you’re unable to focus at work, just remember that one joke (a chicken, a cat and a monkey walk into a bar…)

But don’t forget to hone your wit and sharpen that funny bone! Humor can be harmful if it comes at the expense of someone else, so remember to keep your jokes light and fun. Also, when you bring laughter into the workplace you must recognize when it suits the task at hand and when it’s just inappropriate.

Learn to laugh at what you do without laughing at who you are. This ability helps us keep things in perspective and helps us to let go of upsets, disappointments or frustrations before they become overwhelming.

The Shops' Spotlight...

This Week: Jamie Ortiz: Graphics Student Supervisor, Communications Department

Beach Bytes: How long have you been with the Shops?
Jamie Ortiz: Two years and 7 months. I started as a frontline cashier for Chris Ramirez and found my way back here in the Communications Office!

BB: What does your first name mean?
JO: My full first name is Jamie Lee. My mom claims she added the "Lee" to make it more girly and didn't know it was an actress…whom she happens to love.

BB: What is the last thing you bought from the Shops?

JO: Salmon Burger from the Nugget on Friday. These things are delicious and I wish it was a regular menu item!

BB: What was your major?

JO:
Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Graphic Design major with a minor in Marketing

BB: What is your favorite type of music? Your favorite song?

JO: My answer to this question changes all the time. I literally like everything from underground hip-hop to indie to old school rock. My favorite album right now is Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience.

BB: What three words describe you best?
JO: Crafty. Soft-spoken. Determined.

BB: What are your favorite hobbies? If none, what do you do outside of work and school?

JO: I like to cook and run when I have the time and will power to do it.

BB: Are you a cat lover or a dog lover? Do you have any pets?

JO: Dog lover! I have a dog back home, but since I'm never home, my mom pretty much claimed that dog as her's. I wouldn't mind having one here in LB though ;)

BB: What’s the best piece of advice someone has ever given you?

JO: Not really advice, but quote from a movie: "You can swear and curse the fates, but when it comes to the end, you have to let go." - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Each issue we’ll feature one of our employees, from the newest student employees to the senior staff members in any of our units and offices! If you would like to be put in the Spotlight, please email us at FNS-Communications@csulb.edu.
