Vol. 1213, Issue 24

The inside track for Shops employees

Happy Independence Day
It’s that time of year again – hot summer sun, flip-flops and shorts, grilled burgers and lemonade. In honor of our country’s Independence Day, the 49er Shops will be closed on Thursday, July 4th. Have a safe holiday and check out this calendar of events for all the places having fireworks displays in Long Beach.

Culinary Conference
Last month, June 18-20, four of our Dining Services chefs went to a culinary clinic from Premier, a nationwide healthcare alliance. Antonio Gutierrez, Daniel Aguirre, Abigail Diaz and Victor Sevillano met with a group of over 20 chefs from the region to learn from some of the nation’s top chefs. They honed their skills in a variety of seminars, learning how to create delicious, nutritious, affordable and environmentally friendly food.

“The employees enjoy this session and learn so much,” said Victor Sevillano, Manager of the Beach Walk Café and supervisor of kitchen preparation. “From the first moment we jump into the kitchen, we use our skills to create recipes.” This is a great experience for our chefs, bringing new techniques and ideas to our campus and our palates!

July 2013 Safety Break
Tips for a healthy and effective summer slim-down

We know its summertime and everyone is enjoying the Long Beach sunshine and relaxing by the pool, but this is also a great time to focus on you and be active! Whether it's to look good for an upcoming beach vacation or to simply get in shape, setting healthy goals is a great first step. Sticking to those aspirations doesn’t have to be difficult or stressful. Just follow the tips below for an effective yet healthy summer slim-down and you’ll look and feel great in no time.

Go outdoors
The weather is nice, so why not take your workout routine outdoors? So many outdoor activities are natural calorie-burners, plus they’re a lot of fun and will help you get a tan too (But don’t forget your sunscreen!). Ride bikes on the weekend down Ocean Blvd or play Frisbee on the beach. Infuse your social activities with fitness, too. For example, finish a date night with a romantic walk outside, or have friends over for an outdoor barbecue and dance party.

Gardening is also a great way to enjoy the warm weather, plus you burn calories without even knowing it! Try planting your own herb garden. It’s a simple activity and not only are you reducing your carbon footprint, but you will be able to incorporate fresh and healthy herbs into homemade dishes.

Eat & Drink Smarter
Light foods pair well with warmer weather, so take a fresh approach to meal time. Visit your local farmers market to pick up fresh, seasonal food and get creative in the kitchen. Incorporate water-based fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew and pineapple into meals. For dessert, freeze grapes for a sweet treat after dinner.

Look for snacks and drink options made from pure and simple ingredients. Stay hydrated by stocking the fridge with healthy drink options. A big pitcher of cold water with slices of strawberries, cucumbers and lime is a refreshing drink that’s readily available. This low-calorie drink quenches on even the hottest days.

Rise and shine & try something new!
Get some fresh air first thing in the morning; it will keep you energized all day long. Take a quick walk or practice yoga outside – try it during sunrise for a great way to start your day. You’ll be surprised with how cheery and upbeat you’ll feel.

Warm weather is the perfect time to try something new. Take tennis or golf lessons, or meet friends on a weekly basis to play a different sport. Hit the sand with the family and try some beach body Pilates; do a few crunches on your towel, try some planks in the sand, and even some crab walks. Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes.

Student Recreation and Wellness Center:
Speaking of wellness…Here’s some information about our Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) that you can put to use this summer!

For students not enrolled, a summer membership is only $94. If you’re taking summer classes, you still have your SRWC membership paid for! Just show up for a jog around the upstairs track or try a treadmill or elliptical. The pool, basketball courts, and sand volleyball courts are available for students, and a convenient weight room has all the strength training machines you’ll need.

For everyone at The Beach...

West Campus Drive and Beach Drive Construction
June 24, 2013 – August 23, 2013

During the summer months, the campus performs construction and related projects that would cause major traffic issues during the academic calendar. This summer the focus is on safety projects that include repair, slurry, and restripe on West Campus Drive and Beach Drive from 7th Street to Bellflower. Additionally, new ADA curb ramps, crosswalks, flashing beacons, street lights, catch basin, sidewalks, railing, signs, and landscape will part of this construction. These campus safety projects will affect West Campus Drive and Beach Drive from 7th Street to Bellflower.

Construction is scheduled to begin June 24, 2013 and continue through the summer. Projects include the following:

1.    East Campus Drive Closed for Emergency Utility Line Repair through at least Tuesday, July 9, 2013
East Campus Drive will be closed from the East Campus Turnaround to the Microbiology building. Parking Lots 7, 8, and 8A will be accessible from 7th Street only. Pedestrian traffic is not affected.

2.    Southbound West Campus Drive exit onto 7th Street closed starting this Friday, July 5, 2013
Southbound traffic on West Campus Drive attempting to exit onto 7th Street will not be able to do so on Friday, July 5, 2013 from 6am to about 2pm.  The northbound lanes on West Campus Drive will remain open.

3.    Sidewalk on 7th Street Closed
The sidewalk on the north side (campus side) of 7th Street that goes through the VA campus will be closed.  Completion is scheduled for August 16, 2013.

Alternate Routes: Try entering and exiting the campus using Atherton Street or Palo Verde Avenue for a smoother commute.

Traffic: A minimum of one traffic lane will be maintained in each direction. These lanes will be monitored by flag men at each end, so remember to drive carefully!

Bus Routes: There will be a need to relocate some bus stops on occasion. However, signs will show you the new route to a temporary or nearby bus stop.

Back to School: CSULB Students be aware that Monday, August 19, our campus will have more traffic congestion than any other time of the school year! Be proactive and map out your route ahead of time and make sure to get here early.

Please go to the CSULB Maps, Parking and Traffic Information page for more details about these projects, and for any questions call the Office of Design and Construction at (562) 985-4175.

Interesting Summer Read
Brenda Vogel, a professor of Criminal Justice Studies at CSULB, recently co-authored a book for Wadsworth Publishing – A Primer on Crime and Delinquency Theory.

Appearing in this third edition of the textbook is Vogel’s 184-page examination of criminological theory from biological, psychological and sociological perspectives.

In a description of the book she explains, “The behaviors that society chooses to define as crime change across time and place. Our students assume they know what a crime is, but this text challenges their understanding. This book explores fundamental assumptions about human nature and the nature of society.”

Vogel encourages her potential readers to consider this text.

“If you want to understand the basics of criminological theory, then this book will give you what you need to know without wasting your time with fluff,” she said.

In honor of her published work, the University has announced Vogel the Author of the Month. For more information about her work in Criminal Justice, please visit the University Publications Office’s newsletter here.
