Vol. 1213, Issue 23

The inside track for Shops employees

Ready, Set, SOAR!
As many of you have surely noticed, the campus is once again swarming with its annual gathering of incoming students. During SOAR, these unsuspecting students are subjected to a trek across our uphill campus – in the sun! Luckily for them, that hill leads right to our University Bookstore doors, where we welcome them to the Beach with a new ID card and glorious air-conditioning!

After dazzling their senses with racks of CSULB logos, colored lanyards, coffee cups, pens, jackets, book bags, (and more!), we give them their first class of their CSULB careers – UB101 (University Bookstore 101). Within the time constraint of only half an hour, we fill those bright young minds with useful facts about all 49er Shops’ services. A barrage of posters, coupons and postcards supplement the lesson, and provide a source of entertainment for their departure to their next CSULB adventure!

This joyful jamboree of School Spirit is always headed by the wonderful ID Card Services, along with all the Bookstore managers. An enthusiastic round of applause to everyone who helped put together the University Bookstore SOAR event. And yes – go ahead – pat yourselves on the back, take a bow, and do a little victory dance.

Alejandra Hernandez named Miss Artesia!
On the CSULB campus, there is a proud tradition of students volunteering and finding creative ways to assist their communities. This extends to our own employees at the 49er Shops. Alejandra Hernandez, receptionist in the Bookstore, has been declared winner of the Miss Artesia pageant, which took place on June 1, 2013 at the Albert O. Little Community Center in Artesia Park.

The pageant – a competition meant to provide young women public speaking and leadership skills – crowns six winners each year. Alejandra was given the highest title of the girls competing this year, from the Artesia, Bellflower and Cerritos school districts.

As Miss Artesia, Alejandra now participates in regular community and volunteer programs in the city. Alejandra attended the little league closing ceremonies for her first event as Miss Artesia, handing out trophies and meeting with the players.

Alejandra spoke about her new role in the community, “The reason I entered this pageant is because I feel that there is no greater feeling that can be attained than the one you get back from serving others. I find a lot of joy in going out and being able to represent the city in any way that I can.”

We find your desire to give back and help others inspiring, Alejandra. Congratulations on your crowning and enjoy your year as Miss Artesia!

June Safety Break
It’s Summer Time – Stay Cool!

Did you know that exposure to hot environments can lead to serious illnesses and injuries? Be aware of the risks associated with hot environments and know how to protect yourself and others. Knowing the difference between heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and heat cramps can help you treat each one effectively.

Remember – stay cool to avoid getting these conditions in the first place! When working in a hot environment, make use of fans and drink plenty of water.

Heat Stroke Occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature. This condition can cause death or permanent disability. The symptoms of Heat Stroke include:

• High body temperature
• Confusion
• Loss of coordination
• Hot, dry skin or profuse sweating
• Throbbing headache
• Seizures, coma

First Aid - To treat Heat Stroke, use these procedures:
1.  Request immediate medical assistance
2.  Move to a cool and shaded area
3.  Remove excess clothing and apply cool water to the body

Heat Exhaustion Occurs when the body responds to an excessive loss of water and salt, usually through sweating. The symptoms of Heat Exhaustion include:

• Rapid heart beat
• Heavy sweating
• Extreme weakness or fatigue
• Dizziness
• Nausea, vomiting
• Irritability
• Fast and shallow breathing
• Slightly elevated body temperature

First Aid - To treat Heat Exhaustions, use these procedures:
1.  Rest in a cool area
2.  Drink plenty of water or other cool beverages
3.  Take a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath

Heat Cramps Occur when the body loses a lot of water during strenuous activity. Sweating depletes the body’s salt and moisture levels. The symptoms of Heat Cramps include:
• Muscle cramps and pain, or spasms in the abdomen, arms, or legs.

First Aid - To treat Heat Cramps, use these procedures:
1.  Stop all activity and sit in a cool place
2.  Drink clear juice or a sports beverage, or drink water with food
3.  Do not return to the strenuous activity for a few hours after the cramps
     subside
4.  Seek medical attention if the cramps do not subside within one hour
