Vol. 1213, Issue 25

The inside track for Shops employees

Calling all Artists!
As many of you know, The Chartroom is a beautiful place to dine and enjoy the views of Cal State Long Beach. As we endeavor to further improve the dining experience, we are looking for your input!

If you are an art student, or just a super-talented employee, please send in your artwork submissions to manager Becky Drouin. If your piece is chosen, it will hang in the Chartroom for all patrons to enjoy!

If you are interested in this project, please call Becky Drouin at (562) 985-4039 or email her at becky.drouin@csulb.edu.

For everyone at The Beach...

49er Shops support SHPE in Flight of the Phoenix!
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at CSULB is gearing up for an exciting project this fall. The SHPE team was one of 120 teams chosen from over 1000 applicants nationwide to compete in the Red Bull Flugtag event this September in Long Beach. This is the second time the SHPE will compete in the event, with their first flight in 2010.

Head of the SHPE, Edgar Vazquez, recently reached out to our CEO Don Penrod to discuss funding for the project. We are proud to show our support to this incredible group of individuals in our university’s Engineering Department.

The team has decided on the theme “Viaje de los Muertos” as a reference to an important part of Hispanic culture, Dia de los Muertos. The “Day of the Dead” holiday focuses on the gathering of family and friends to pray and remember those who have passed away. The aircraft they are designing will be in form of a phoenix, a symbol of "life after death".

As the team builds their aircraft over the course of the next two months, we will keep you updated on Facebook and Instagram, showing you the “birth” of the Phoenix.

The Shops’ Hot Seat

Each issue we’ll feature one of our employees, from the newest student employees to the senior staff members in any of our units and offices!

This Week: David Nuon: Web Specialist, IT Department

Beach Bytes: How long have you been with the Shops?
David Nuon: I've been here a bit over 2 years now.

BB: What does your first name mean?
DN: First name means 'beloved', last name refers to a flower.

BB: What is the last thing you bought from the Shops?
DN: I last bought an iced coffee from the Nugget.

BB: What is your major?
DN: I'm currently pursuing a BS in Computer Science.

BB: What is your favorite type of music? Your favorite song?
DN: I listen to music when I work on things, and I like something upbeat and motivational. My library ranges from reggae, punk rock, k-pop, jazz and Schlager. My favorite song is a tie between 'Das Experiment' by Roger Cicero and 'ONE SURVIVE' by Nakashima Mika.

BB: What three words describe you best?
DN: Can I say caffeinated three times? If not, caffeinated, creative, coffee.

BB: What are your favorite hobbies? If none, what do you do outside of work and/or school?
DN: I do motion graphics and I illustrate when I'm not at school. Occasionally, I help my friends make games. Funny thing: I wanted to study fine art before I attended CSULB, but I couldn't decide between that and Engineering. So, I flipped a coin and made my decision.

BB: Are you a cat lover or a dog lover? Do you have any pets?
DN: I have no preference for either, I love them both. I don't have any pets at the moment.

BB: What’s the best piece of advice someone has ever given you?
DN: Strive to know more about the world everyday and lessen the suffering of others.
