Vol. 1213, Issue 05

The inside track for Shops employees

Scholarships for Student Employees
There are close to 35,000 students attending CSULB. Hundreds of scholarships are available each year to the entire university—that’s a lot of competition. Here at the 49er Shops, there are less than 700 student employees. These Student Employee Scholarships are only available to Shops student team members—a much smaller pool, drastically increasing your chances of receiving one.

The application for the 2012 Student Employee Scholarships is attached, with full details on eligibility, what to include in the application package and more. Scholarships ranging from $250.00 to $1,000.00 are awarded each year to outstanding student employees. If you have any questions, please contact the Human Resources office at (562) 985-7854 or by jobs@shopthebeach.com The deadline to submit your package is October 1, 2012, so get your application today!

August Bravo Winners!
These ten winners were randomly drawn from all the Bravo Awards submitted during the month of August. The winners each receive 4 unrestricted AMC movie tickets, 4 small popcorn vouchers, & 4 small drink vouchers. The monthly Bravo poster is in the hallway of the employee entrance by the elevator and HR.

If your name is listed below, please come claim your entertainment packet in Human Resources.
·         Vineet Gupta (311)
·         Erica Lee (312)
·         Kyle Richardson (301)
·         Yvette Shinozawa (444)
·         Sandy Phillips (202)
·         Marlon Deleon (206)
·         Kat Calderon (414)
·         Alma Smith (203)
·         Ralph Aguirre (311)
·         Patrick Joyce (313)
A Bravo! is given when someone goes the extra mile to make sure a customer is happy, work is done well, lends a hand to another department or anything else that seems “bravo-worthy.”

Clean smartly, work safely
As September rolls along and the seasons are changing, let’s leave the falling to the leaves outside. Approximately 6,000 persons are killed on the job annually in the United States and an estimated 19,500 in home accidents. Seventeen percent of the on-the-job deaths are caused by falls, many of which result from neglecting simple housekeeping practices.

Falls often result from tripping over loose articles and trash left in aisles and work areas.
Spills and wet spots also cause slips and falls. Debris and wet spots should be cleaned up immediately, regardless of who was responsible for it being there.

It is easy to overlook housekeeping as a key duty on the job, especially with the mentality of “that’s someone else’s job.” In orientation, we share our list of core values, and two of them are Responsibility and Accountability. The cleanliness of work areas is vital to the safety of all workers, whether it’s a kitchen, the sales floor, or in an office.

So, the next time you are walking through the University Bookstore or one of our Dining Services locations, take the time to pick up a piece of trash you see on the floor or inform someone in the department of a spill you noticed. Just because you saw it doesn’t mean the next person will.

Vol. 1213, Issue 04

The inside track for Shops employees

Welcome, Tristy!
At last month’s Breakfast Management Meetings, we had a special guest in attendance who joined us before her official start date. Now that she’s officially joined the team at the Shops, we would like to welcome our new Director of Bookstore Services, Tristy Hillestad! For a photo from her first day with some Bookstore staff, click here! (Thanks, Steve Z. for the great picture!)

Tristy is SDSU alumni with a B.S. in Textiles—emphasis in Retail (and that’s South Dakota State University, not San Diego State as you may have guessed). She joins us here at Cal State Long Beach after 17 years with the University of Denver, where she was a buyer, manager, and eventually the University Bookstore Director, in addition to serving as the Director of Budget and Planning in the Division of Math and Sciences. Welcome to the Shops, Tristy!

Dorm Move-In Weekend
Thank you to everyone that supported the busy weekend before the first day of school! Over 400 orders were placed with the Dorm Delivery Program for Dorm Move-in on August 25th, and the Back to School VIP event on the 26th had live music, prizes, and plenty of food! Special thanks to Cyndi Farrington, Brian Fetterman, Melissa Devan, Steve Zimmerle, Kristin Bonetati and Juan Calvillo! Go Shops!

Steve shared one of his favorite moments of the weekend, where he was setting up a Wii for an interactive gaming display, and a young child was so excited to play Super Mario Brothers, that he voluntarily finished setting up the Wii for Steve while he stepped away to grab more items for the display. Young Wii-friend, if you end up coming to CSULB when you’re older, you may have a tech job in your future!

Help us help you
Ask your co-workers if they’re getting the Beach Bytes. If they aren’t, not only are they missing important announcement and fun events, but they could be missing out on many other emails from Human Resources.

If you know a Shops employee that isn’t receiving these emails, please have them contact HR to ensure they have the correct email address in their records.

Take a seat, friends.
At New Hire Orientation (in the Corporate session), we emphasize the importance of reinforcing the human aspect of our organization. It’s easy to forget that the people working next to us are students, parents, athletes, and not “just employees” of the Forty-Niner Shops. One way we share this side of the staff is with the Beach Breeze, another is with the Employee Hot Seat.

Please take a couple minutes to fill out the Hot Seat survey for yourself and send it to FNS-Communications@csulb.edu or contact Marlon directly at Marlon.Deleon@csulb.edu if you have any questions.

·         Name (as you would like it to appear):
·         Department/Unit:
·         Title/position:
·         How long have you been with the Shops?
·         Favorite Starbucks Drink/Nugget Menu item?
·         Favorite Color:
·         Favorite quote/saying?
·         What’s your sign?
·         What’s one super interesting factoid about you that no one would know by looking at you?
