The inside track for Shops employees
Our Spectacular Seniors
Graduating seniors of the 49er Shops – you will be missed! Many of our student staff members at the Shops have been with us for a long time and moved up to student supervisor positions, while some of you have just joined us recently. Regardless of how long you’ve been with us, or where in the Shops you work, we hope you have learned some valuable life and work skills to be successful in your future careers!
Commencement: Don’t forget to pick up your cap and gown at the Bookstore, starting Monday, May 6th. The Bookstore will be distributing caps and gowns all the way through Commencement.
Before we part ways, the 49er Shops would like to honor all of our seniors at the Grad Luncheon on May 9th from 11:30am – 1:30pm in the Chartroom.
Award – Winning Community Commitment
This spring, two of our student employees were awarded for their dedication to community service and support of our local community. Meet Tony Hoang and Daisy Cisneros.
Tony Hoang
The University Achievement Awards honored a number of faculty, students and staff of Cal State Long Beach. Our own Tony Hoang, a student assistant in the Communications Department, received a Community Service Award. He was recognized by the University for his multiple community service endeavors, including his work in the service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega and unpaid internship with the Christopher and Dana Reeves Foundation. He participated in Alternative Spring Break in Spring 2012, and has been instrumental in creating a program for homeless in Los Angeles. Thank you, Tony, for your dedication to the betterment of our society through your continual community service efforts. Congratulations Tony!
Daisy Cisneros
The President's Commission on the Status of Women presented an award to our student employee Daisy Cisneros, a student supervisor at The Nugget. The Advancement of Women Awards honor individuals for their work on behalf of women and for commitment to the advancement of women. Each year, the award is presented to one Faculty, Staff and Student. The award ceremony was held at the Pointe in the Pyramid on April 10, 2013. We are honored to have someone as inspirational as you, Daisy, on our 49er Shops team. Congratulations Daisy!
Relay for Life
Relay for Life will be held on the campus track by the Pyramid this Friday, April 26 through Saturday, April 27. It is a 24-hour event that begins at 6pm on Friday and lasts through 6pm on Saturday. The 49er Shops is helping to sponsor the event, as well as participating as a team, The Walking 49ers. All employees are encouraged to sign up for our team, fundraise, and participate in the event. Bowling for Books
The Bowling for Books fundraiser was a huge success this year, with more teams than ever participating in the event. The event raised more than $73,000, which will go towards next year’s 49er Textbook Scholarship program. We would like to send a big 49er THANK YOU to all our Shops employees and participants who bowled with us and helped us to raise this amount!
Honorable Mention
We want to give special shout out to the team that raised the most money, the Out of Controllers, from the Campus Financial Management Accounting Office. They raised a total of $325 that will go to our 49er Textbook Scholarship!
We are the Champions!
The competition this year was fierce and enthusiastic! Bowling balls were thrown, and pins fell left and right in the battle. One team emerged victorious from this jubilee of mad skills and determination: Split Happens won best game, with a score of 663. We honored them, and many other winning teams at the award ceremony.
Pin it and Win it!
This year, as part of the fundraising efforts on campus, the Shops offered a chance for students to purchase a paper bowling pin with the chance of winning a semester of free tuition. Several pins were entered into the contest, with creative designs depicting a great amount of school spirit. Among this menagerie of artistic talent, was a pin featuring a CSULB t-shirt and the Pyramid, along with a Hello Kitty and some sunflowers. The winner, Alejandra Hernandez, wrote beside her pin “…I am a junior highly involved at CSULB through ASI and Sigma Kappa…I LOVE going to CSULB!” We are glad she loves this school, because her tuition is now paid for the Fall 2013 semester! Congratulations, Alejandra!
