Vol. 1213, Issue 02

The inside track for Shops employees

Introductions all around…
Beach Bytes emails are sent only to Forty-Niner Shops employees, and they come out approximately twice a month. With so many of us in so many different places, this email update is the most efficient way to share information with the company on a regular basis. Each Bytes issue will have three sections: “The Inside Track” (info that’s generally important to just our employees), “For Everyone at The Beach” (info to share with customers, classmates, and friends of campus community), and the “Hot Seat” (where you can learn interesting facts about your fellow Shops team).
The Beach Breeze is an e-newsletter that’s publically accessible. We post stories of our people on the website for everyone to see. To check out one from last summer, click here. It’s going through a little facelift, but there will be one coming out soon. We’ll let you know when it’s published!
Beach Bytes—just for us. Beach Breeze—for the campus community. We hope that helps!

New faces at the reception desk
Through the glass door on the second floor of the University Bookstore are the Shops Corporate Offices. Kellie Moffatt and Jonathan Rowe are two student receptionists that are new to the desk upstairs, but not to the Shops. Kellie, a Fashion Merchandising major, transferred from the Beach Walk Café, and Jonathan, a Comparative World Literature major, came from upper campus at the Library Starbucks. Congratulations on the transfer and welcome to the reception desk!

Department Merge
Graphics and Communications have merged their team members together into a singular Communications Department. Rosa Hernandez-Henderson (Dir. of Communications/HR) and Marianne Winters-Russo (previously Graphics Supervisor, now Communications Supervisor) have combined to coordinate the efforts of Student Graphics Designers, Social Media and Communications Assistants into one team.
The Communications office is located in the southwest corner of the University Bookstore building, near the Campus Copy Center/production area, Textbook Offices, and the Warehouse. Their extension is 5-1125. The CCC Production Area still uses 5-1659, which was previously shared by both offices.

Expanding Shops Communications’ Team
Two new members have been added to the Shops Communications team: Erin Lightfoot and Erik Ernst. Erik, a Communications major, transferred in from the Warehouse to be the Social Media Assistant, and Erin Lightfoot (B.A. Communications Studies, Minor in Marketing) is currently pursuing her M.A. in Transformative Leadership while contributing as a Communications Assistant. Erin previously worked for the Shops in the UDP while pursuing her Bachelor’s. Welcome Erin and Erik!

Staff Day comes to the Nugget
As part of three days of events for CSULB Staff Day, the Nugget will be hosting a Yogurtland Staff Social on Thursday, July 26, from 11:30am-1:30pm. Local band Low Low Jones will be performing during that time with their special blend of funk, rock, and soul. If you see any CSULB Staff members, this is the same day as their special one day sale!
For questions about Staff Week, contact Lupe Swartz at extension 5-2389 or Lupe.Swartz@csulb.edu

For everyone at The Beach...

A bit of London at the Beach
The 2012 Olympic Games start Friday, July 27, and during regular business hours at the Nugget (7:30am-2:30pm), the games will be televised. Stop in for a bite and a beverage to cheer on your favorite athletes and teams, or just to catch a piece of international history!

CCC Special of the Month
Each month the Campus Copy Center has a different deal for students, staff, and faculty alike. For the rest of July, get ½ off any copies made on Rocket Red or Celestial Blue and receive 20% off orders of business cards and custom rubber stamps. Contact CopyCenter@csulb.edu if you have any questions or visit them in the southwest corner of the University Bookstore, facing the Psych building and Lot 4.

The inside track for Shops employees

Pacific Chef Net
In late June, several members of the Dining Services team participated in the 2012 Pacific Chef Net Conference presented by NACUFS (National Association of College & University Food Services). Victor Sevillano (Beach Walk Café/Pete’s Fresco Grille), Leena Man (Beach Walk Café), Tori Kasik (Nugget), Gilberto Diaz (Parkside), Antonio Gutierrez (Parkside), Martin Duran (Residence Halls), and Antonio Diaz (Residence Halls) joined many other foodservice professionals at the four-day conference hosted by Cal Poly Pomona and Azusa Pacific University.
Tours of dining facilities, workshops on the latest culinary techniques, lectures by guest professionals and participants, and of course an array of delicacies were shared by the staff and student chefs in attendance. Many thanks to those of you who represented the Shops at this regional conference!

Renew your view of the Shops
Summertime means hiring season for the next academic year, and with that comes New Hire Orientation. Full-time employees are strongly encouraged to attend, not only as a refresher course, but also because some of the information (and most of the presentation) has changed. With over 200 incoming new hires, this is a great opportunity to see what will be shared with the new employees, and can serve as a foundation for teambuilding as we move into the new semester.
To RSVP for the Friday, August 10 session, please call Human Resources at x57953 or email jobs@shopthebeach.com.

For everyone at The Beach...

Mid-week holiday
Wednesday, July 4th, the CSULB campus (including all on campus Shops units) will be closed in observance of Independence Day. Enjoy the day off in the middle of the week!

Dining Halls aren’t just for dorm residents
Did you know that ID Card Services offers a meal plan where you pay for 40 meals ahead of time and can use them whenever you want, all year at the Residence Halls and Parkside Dining? The Commuter Meal Plan is available to all students, staff and faculty, and it’s as simple and convenient as you want it to be. We know days on campus can be long with work or school, so save yourself some time and enjoy an all you can eat meal with the Shops.
For more details and to sign up for the Commuter Meal Plan, please visit the ID Card Services Office on the first floor of the University Bookstore.

The Shops’ Hot Seat

Each issue we’ll feature one of our employees, from the newest student employees to the senior staff members from any of our units and offices!
This time we feature a double header, and they have more in common besides both working for the Shops. Enjoy!
