A Bravo! is given when someone goes the extra mile to make sure a customer is happy, work is done well, lends a hand to another department or anything else that seems “bravo-worthy.”

Don’t stress at work, work at work
Work is stressful—as the saying goes: if it was easy, everyone would be doing it—but too much stress can negatively affect your health and your productivity. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health defines stress as the “harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of the job do not match the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker.” Across the country, job stress costs employers approximately $300 million each year due to worker illness causing uncovered shifts and lost productivity.

Do you feel that too much is expected of you at work? For student employees, we emphasize the fact that “student” comes before “employee,” and that your academic obligations take priority. Is your class work being sacrificed? You education comes first. Maybe your job isn’t stressful at all, but your personal life is seeping into your time on the clock?

Stress can cause a rise in blood pressure and unnecessary muscle tension, and has been linked to cardiovascular disease, psychological deficiencies, “burning out,” and more.

Find ways to manage your stress:
·         Take a couple deep breaths and count backwards from ten.
·         Go for a walk on your fifteen or lunch.
·         Talk to a co-worker, supervisor, or anyone you feel comfortable with.
·         Sleep, exercise, and engage in a balanced diet

If you feel like your stress levels are increasing to unhealthy levels, please talk to your supervisor, visit CAPS on campus, or even the Student Health Center. One of the messages about customer service we share in orientation is that someone around you probably has an answer even if you don’t know. Employees are customers too, and someone around you probably has an answer.

National Student Day Thank You
The National Student Day event on Thursday, October 4 was a huge success! Volunteer stories were shared, organizations from all over Long Beach, off-campus and on, participated, and over 3,500 promo booklets were distributed.

Student Watch Survey
You could win the Grand Prize of $1,000, a 26" flat-screen HDTV, a set of Sol Republic headphones, or a cash prize of $100 just by taking an online survey!

CSULB Enrollment Services will be sending out an email with details, but here's the short version...

The National Association of College Stores (NACS) sends out the Student Watch Survey each year to get some feedback from customers of college stores--you--and this year's survey is from Oct 15-26. Take the survey here:

The CSULB Bookstore (a major player of the Forty-Niner Shops, Inc.) is a member of NACS, so that's where the connection is made between NACS, CSULB, and you.

All students, staff, faculty, and readers of this event are eligible to take the survey, so visit the above website between the 15th and 26th for your chance to win!

Any questions or comments about the survey can be directed to bookstore@csulb.edu.

The Shops’ Hot Seat

Each issue we’ll feature one of our employees, from the newest student employees to the senior staff members in any of our units and offices!

This Week: Sandy Rivera, Student Assistant—Customer Service, 301 (Bookstore)

How long have you been with the Shops?
·         I have been with the 49er Shops for 3 years. I started as a Temporary Frontline Cashier in 2009 and was happily promoted by my awesome manager this past January as a Student Assistant.

Favorite Starbucks drink and Nugget Menu Item:
·         When the weather is cold, I opt for a hot Peppermint White Mocha with whipped cream and when the weather is warm, an Iced Coffee with Milk, sweetened, with 2 pumps of hazelnut. Hmmm…the new Irish Nachos are quite satiating.

Favorite Color:
·         Red: It’s the color of passion and joy, and best of all, love.

Favorite quote/saying:
·         Quote: “As long as we can love each other, and remember the feeling of love we had, we can die without ever really going away. All the love you created is still there. All the memories are still there. You live on—in the hearts of everyone you have touched and nurtured while you were here. (Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom)”
·         Saying: “Everything has beauty but not everyone sees it.”

What’s your sign?
·         Leo

What’s one super interesting factoid about you that no one would know by looking at you?
·         I’ve never been to a gym…something about dressing up and worrying about how sweaty or messy you look in front of people bothers me. I do, however, play outdoor sports or run at my local park for exercise

The inside track for Shops employees

Scholarship Deadline is October 1st
If you’re applying for the Student Employee Scholarships, remember to submit your packet before the end of the day on Monday, October 1st to Human Resources. Good luck, applicants!

Coupon Booklets for all!
You may have heard of a 49er Shops coupon book that is in circulation, and we think you should have a few. Yes, you can use them yourselves, but we want our large family of student employees to take a bundle (or a few) to your classes to share the savings with your teachers and students while telling them a little about the Forty-Niner Shops. If you’d like a refresher on who is a part of the team, flip open the inside cover of the booklet and/or check out this video!
Visit the Communications office (by the CCC Production Area inside the Bookstore) to grab more to share in your classes! Questions? Please email the Communications Dept (email below) or call (562) 985-1125 for more info.

Tag, Share, Like, and Follow the Shops
Since this gets emailed out, it’s fairly safe to say you’re reading this on a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Many of you probably have Facebook pages and/or Twitter accounts. Since it isn’t really “social media” without being social, visit our pages and give us a like and follow our handles. This isn’t just for your information, but also for your Facebook friends, and to share your support of the Shops online.
Did you take a picture heading into work, on your break, or just feeling like sharing some love? Remember to use hashtags on Instagram and Twitter so we can all join the party!

Cart Safety
A reminder about those who drive electric carts on campus: please be aware to leave accessible pathways when parking. Not only for your safety, but also for others in the large crowds in rushes between classes and for those requiring additional mobility accommodations. All drivers should be certified with Human Resources to have completed Driver Training. If you have not and are required to drive an electric cart, please contact your manager and the HR office.

Take a seat, friends.
At New Hire Orientation (in the Corporate session), we emphasize the importance of reinforcing the human aspect of our organization. It’s easy to forget that the people working next to us are students, parents, athletes, and not “just employees” of the Forty-Niner Shops. One way we share this side of the staff is with the Beach Breeze, another is with the Employee Hot Seat.

Please take a couple minutes to fill out the Hot Seat survey for yourself and send it to FNS-Communications@csulb.edu or contact Marlon directly at Marlon.Deleon@csulb.edu if you have any questions.
