Vol. 1213, Issue 16

The inside track for Shops employees

This Weekend, It’s TIME to Spring Forward
Which sounds like a big deal, but you don’t need to worry! You’ve lived through the Apocalypse already, so Daylight Savings Time is no biggie (except for losing an hour of sleep). So make sure to adjust your clocks or you might be showing up late for class on Monday. On the plus side, the sun will beam down on us for one more happy hour each day. Shine on, students and staff!

Congratulations Graduating Seniors
Nothing is more important to the 49er Shops than seeing our students succeed and that most definitely includes Commencement. As part of this, all Forty-Niner Shops employees are eligible to receive a free cap & gown rental if they are employed through the time of Graduation.

Need more information about graduating and Commencement– then definitely check out our section below on our upcoming Grad Fair!

February Bravo Winners!
These ten winners were randomly drawn from all the Bravo Awards submitted during the month of February. The winners each receive 4 unrestricted AMC movie tickets, 4 small popcorn vouchers, and 4 small drink vouchers. The monthly Bravo poster is in the hallway of the employee entrance by the elevator and HR.

If your name is listed below, please come claim your entertainment packet in Human Resources.

March 2013 Safety Break

Sleep Habits: More Important Than You Think
Not sleeping enough and not sleeping well is not OK. As a matter of fact, there is quite a price to pay. It may surprise you to learn that chronic sleep deprivation, for whatever reason, significantly affects your health, performance, safety, and pocketbook.

There are many causes of sleep deprivation. The stresses of daily life may intrude upon our ability to sleep well, or perhaps we trade sleep for more work or play (aka, you shouldn’t stay up till 3am on Friday nights). It is especially critical that students learn to stop studying or working late and trade the all-nighter for a good night’s sleep. This can improve your health, happiness, and grades!

Sleep deprivation is very often due to unrecognized sleep disorders. You might think, "It's just the stress of work or school," or you might have "always felt this way" and had no idea that you should feel differently. This lack of awareness compounds the consequences, because so many people remain undiagnosed for years.

Consequences of Sleep Deprivation:
·         Decreased Performance and Alertness
·         Memory and Cognitive Impairment
·         Stressful Relationships
·         Poor Quality of Life
·         Occupational Injury
·         Automobile Injury

Recommendations to Avoid Sleep Deprivation:
·         Maintain a regular sleep-wake schedule
·         Avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and other chemicals that interfere with sleep
·         Make your bedroom a comfortable sleep environment
·         Establish a calming pre-sleep routine
·         Go to sleep when you're truly tired
·         Do not watch the clock at night
·         Use light to your advantage by exposing yourself to light during the day and limiting light exposure in the evening
·         Do not nap too close to your regular bedtime
·         Eat and drink enough—but not too much or too soon before bedtime
·         Exercise regularly—but not too soon before bedtime

For everyone at The Beach...

Grad Fair is Here

Bowling for Books is Coming Soon!
The biggest 49er Shops fundraiser of the year has arrived! Friday, April 12 the Shops will be hosting the Fifth Annual Bowling for Books Tournament at Cal Bowl in Lakewood, CA.

That means participants only have ONE MONTH to create teams, sign up to bowl, and fundraise as much as possible! If you are interested in attending, please invite friends, family, and coworkers to bowl with you. Everyone is welcome, not just students and staff from CSULB.

The registration deadline for the fundraiser is Monday, April 8. (And don’t forget - Spring Break is the first week of April!) There are only so many bowling lanes available, so turn in your registration as soon as you can. The registration fee is $25 per person, but all individuals are encouraged to “Fundraise to Bowl, don’t pay to Bowl!”

Registration forms for the event are available in the Bookstore Customer Service Center as well as online at www.shopthebeach.com.  If you have any questions about registration for Bowling for Books, please contact Linda Welty at (562)985-7700 or linda.welty@csulb.edu.

The Shops’ Hot Seat

Each issue we’ll feature one of our employees, from the newest student employees to the senior staff members in any of our units and offices!

This Week: Anton Berner: Food Service, Parkside Dining Hall

Beach Bytes: How long have you been with the Shops?
Anton Berner: This is my second semester.

BB: What does your first name mean?
AB: Anton means highly praiseworthy.

BB: What is the last thing you bought from the Shops?
AB: Coffee! I buy at least 3 cups a day.

BB: What is your major?
AB: Marketing.

BB: What is your favorite type of music? Your favorite song?
AB: I mostly listen to hip hop. Right now Kendrick Lamar's new album has been on repeat in my iPod since my childhood friend produces beats for Kendrick.

BB: What three words describe you best?
AB: Driven, Optimistic, and super cool of course.

BB: What are your favorite hobbies? What do you do outside of work and school?
AB: I write, produce and perform hip hop music whenever I have time on my hands. I'm currently working on a new album and I engineer the records myself in my home studio. So I'm staying busy at all times.

BB: Are you a cat lover or a dog lover? Do you have any pets?
AB: I have a dog back in Sweden where my family still lives. I only get to see him once a year though, which is of course, sad. I love dogs.

BB: What’s the best piece of advice someone has ever given you?
AB: Someone once told me to always strive for greatness, work hard, and treat everyone with respect and kindness and you will eventually be noticed. Great things will automatically follow.

Have an announcement for the Shops family, and/or want to be featured in a future issue? Please email FNS-Communications@csulb.edu with “Beach Bytes” in the subject line!
