The inside track for Shops employees

Free Semester of Tuition!
By now you’ve heard about Bowling for Books, but did you know the Forty-Niner Shops is holding a photo contest to help support the fundraiser? Student employees are eligible to compete in this fun contest and win a free semester of tuition! If you haven’t purchased your pin yet, then simply go to any 49er Shops retail store to buy one (or more!) for $3.00 each. You can then decorate your pin before uploading a picture of it onto the CSULB Bookstore Facebook Page. The picture with the most “Likes” on Facebook will win! For Terms and Conditions and further details on how to enter, visit the “B4B Photo Contest” album on the Facebook Page.

If you want to support Bowling for Books further, don’t forget to register your team! The fundraiser is this Friday, April 12 from 1-6 pm at Calbowl in Lakewood. For more information, visit http://www.csulb.edu/aux/49ershops/corporate/bowling/.

April Safety Break
Stress Reduction Tips

It is important to learn how to reduce stress and keep a healthy mind and body while in school and at work. People who suffer from chronic stress are more likely to experience moodiness, poor digestion and anxiety.

Stress is a normal reaction to the demands of work, school and daily life, but having too much stress over a long period of time can cause many serious health problems. Having a stress management system, like meditation or deep breathing can help improve your health and give you peace of mind. Studies suggest that when you are stressed, performing regular, mindful breathing exercises can have many health benefits, like slowing a fast heart rate and lowering your blood pressure. Here are some simple breathing exercises you can do standing, sitting or even at your desk that will keep your brain and body stress free.

·         Sitting in a comfortable position, breathe in through your nose while counting to five. When you reach five, breathe out through your mouth while counting to eight. Repeat this three to four times.
·         Sitting with your legs crossed and eyes closed, take a deep breath. Let the air fill your stomach and not your chest. Breathe out and repeat two times. Now breathe normally, inhaling with your nose and exhaling with your mouth. Focus on your breath and keep breathing like this until you feel calm.
·         Sitting in a comfortable position, close your eyes and breathe deeply. Imagine being in your favorite place or at the beach. Breathe deeply while still imagining yourself at your peaceful place. Repeat until you feel less tense and relaxed.

Just doing simple breathing exercises each day can help give you a much needed break from the stress of daily life.

For everyone at The Beach...

Relay for Life
Relay for Life is being held this year on the CSULB campus April 26-27. The Long Beach branch of the American Cancer Society and the Colleges Against Cancer organization on campus are working together to host this event. This community gathering allows students, faculty and staff the opportunity to fight cancer and help save lives. Because “cancer never sleeps,” the walk is held overnight, and all teams are asked to have one representative walk throughout the night.

Forty-Niner Shops employees are welcome to become a part of our team, “The Walking 49ers.” Registration is free for all 49er Shops employees who are participating with our organization’s team! When registering online, just click “pay later” (don’t worry, you don’t actually pay later), and then sign up for our team! To register, visit the Relay for Life Website at www.relayforlife.org. For more information, please contact Ashield Cabrera at Ashield.Cabrera@gmail.com.

Psych Day
Psych Day will be held on Wednesday, April 24th from 10am to 5pm in the Psych Quad. There will also be workshops held throughout the day and keynote speaker, Dr. Virginia Huynh, will be speaking in PSY 150 from 3:30-4:30pm. Her lecture will talk about her research into ethnic micro aggressions and how this affects the health and wellbeing of Asian and Latino adolescents. A reception will follow in the Psych Quad with food and beverages with a potluck to be held from 11-1pm for all students and faculty.
