The inside track for Shops employees
Ready, Get set, Bowl!
As the Spring semester progresses, it’s time to prepare for the Fifth Annual Bowling For Books Fundraiser! This year’s bowling tournament will take place on Friday, April 12 at 1:00pm at the CalBowl in Lakewood, CA. The event goes for a great cause, the 49er Textbook Scholarship fund, which has given over $224,000 to students for textbooks since it began in 2009.
Students and faculty take part in this event each year, along with local businesses and corporate sponsors. Teams of four come together to bowl, eat, drink, and win prizes! All participants are encouraged to fundraise as much as possible, and the team that raises the most money even wins a prize! If you are interested, look for updates and details in the next few issues of Beach Bytes.

Cold and Flu Prevention Tips
It’s that time of year when coughs, colds, and seasonal flu seem to spread easily. Follow these simple tips to avoid spreading illness.
1. Wash your hands frequently using warm water and soap, scrubbing all surfaces (that includes under your fingernails!) for about 15-20 seconds. Some flu viruses can live up to 2 hours on surfaces such as counters, phones, and door knobs. When soap and water are not available, hand sanitizers containing 60-90% ethyl alcohol or isopropanol may be used.
2. Avoid touching your face, unless you have clean hands. The eyes, nose and mouth are entry ports for flu viruses. If you are handling cash, this is especially important to remember!
3. Cover your mouth with a disposable tissue when coughing and sneezing. Dispose of tissues and wash your hands immediately.
4. Avoid sharing objects (cups, utensils, etc.). Wipe down shared equipment such as phones and keyboards.
5. Get enough sleep and manage your stress. Lack of sleep and high levels of stress can reduce immune functioning, thus lowering the body’s ability to fend off colds and flu. Students, this means you need to make a study schedule! Procrastination leads to an excess of stress in key points throughout the semester. Keeping good study habits will help you stay healthy and get better grades!
6. Drink more water. You may not feel as thirsty during fall and winter, but it’s important to make sure you don’t get dehydrated. Consume at least 8 glasses a day.
7. Maintain a moderate exercise program 3-4 days a week. It will strengthen the immune system and increase the body’s natural ability to fight infection.
8. Eat healthfully. Remember to eat the recommended 5-9 servings per day of fruits and vegetables. Bring a banana or apple to work and eat it during your break!
9. Limit alcohol intake. Alcohol can be dehydrating which, in turn, may decrease your resistance to infection.
10. Finally, listen to your body! Stay home if you have a fever and are coughing. You will feel better and recover faster if you rest. This will also reduce the risk of infecting others, a benefit your coworkers are sure to appreciate!
