Vol. 1213, Issue 13

The inside track for Shops employees

Welcome Back Students and Staff!
Spring semester is upon us, so we hope you enjoyed your break! This semester will bring a great deal of exciting events to campus, with the annual Bowling for Books fundraiser as well as a fast-approaching graduation for our seniors.

Week of Welcome
Week of Welcome, presented by the ASI Student Orientation Commission, will take place January 29th-31st, from 11am to 2pm in the Central Quad (Commencement Lawn). Week of Welcome is a week-long event that includes the ASI Resource Fair and the Student Organizations Fair. This event provides students an opportunity to view the resources this campus has to offer all in one place.

The ASI Resource Fair, taking place Tuesday, Jan 29, is a day for students to get to know on-campus resources, such as FamilyPact and Career Development Center. There will also be school departments, such as Student Life and Development. The 49er Shops is participating as well, giving new students information on our Dining Services, Bookstore options, and other services we provide. If you are interested in working at the 49er Shops table, please email the Communications Department at fns-communications@csulb.edu.

The Student Organization Fair is a gathering of student organizations and staff. Over a hundred academic, cultural, sport, etc. clubs and organizations will table for new members. This is an opportunity to get to know new people and try new activities, so get out there!

Payroll Tax Changes
Many of you will notice a decrease in the net amount of your first paycheck for 2013.  The House and Senate passed the H.R.8, American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (ATRA), which includes several changes to tax laws affecting payroll and employment tax administration.  The most prominent change is the amount of Social Security Taxes that are taken out of our pay.  Effective January 1, 2013 the employee Social Security rate was increased to 6.2%.  An increase of 2% from 2012.

If you have any questions, or would like more information on these changes, please visit www.irs.gov or contact Suzanne O’Deegan from the 49er Shops Human Resources Department at Suzanne.ODeegan@csulb.edu or (562) 985-7385.

  For everyone at The Beach...

Sustainable Starbucks
Starbucks has launched a new line of reusable cups in hopes of further reducing its cup waste. The use of traditional disposable cups is the most significant way the company generates waste. Over the years, the company has always tried to promote the use of reusable cups by offering a cup discount to anyone who brings in their own cup.

Their new disposable cup is only $1.00 and you receive a $.10 discount every time you use it. Dropping the price makes it more affordable for people trying to reduce the waste from disposable packaging. In addition to reducing waste, the cup pays for itself in only 10 visits (when the discount is applied).

Nugget Tunes
The Nugget has recently installed a digital juke box by Touch Tunes. To play songs, students just pay $1 for 2 credits or $5 for 15 credits (each song is worth 2 credits). Another cool feature is that students may take pictures via the juke box (cost 2 credits) and upload them to their email accounts.

John and Jon Town Hall at the Nugget
The next Town Hall meeting with the ASI President, John Haberstroh, and ASI VP, Jonathan Bolin, will be Tuesday, February 5th at 2pm in the Nugget. Come by to hear ASI updates and share your questions and concerns!

Comedy Show
The Nugget will be hosting The Really, Really Good Comedy Show on Thursday, January 24 at 6pm. Host Daniel Eachus and Entertaining Entertainment presents a fresh batch of local comedians and live music by house band Somewhat Sober. Admission is FREE!
