The inside track for Shops employees
HAPPY HOLIDAYS from the 49er Shops & Beach Bytes
We would like to wish all 49er Shops employees, friends, and families a happy and safe holiday season. In observance of the upcoming holidays, the Shops will be closed on Monday, December 24th – Tuesday, January 1st, 2013.
Due to this closure we will be sending out only one Beach Bytes for the month of December. But no need to worry, we will be back in January to keep you informed of everything going on at the 49er Shops and CSULB in 2013.

Seven Common Accident Causes
We all know accidents occur every day for many different reasons. Instead of looking for “things” to blame when accidents happen, a better idea is to examine common “root causes” for why they occur in the first place. Check out the list below to see if you could be guilty of some of these attitudes or behaviors. Keeping these in mind could keep you from getting hurt next time an accident injures you or someone you care about.
1. Taking Shortcuts: We all make conscious decisions every day to hopefully make things faster or more efficient. But do these time savers really do just that or do they put your own safety at risk, or worse, the safety of those around you. Legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden said it best “If you can’t find the time to do it right, when will you find the time to do it over?”
2. Being Over-Confident: While confidence is a good thing, being over confident isn’t a good thing at all. Just because something hasn’t happened to you yet is no guarantee that it won’t happen. An “it can never happen to me” attitude can lead to an injury before you know it.
3. Knowing is Half the Battle: Doing any activity safely and right the first time means you need all the information to do it correctly. Ask questions if you don’t know what you need to do. It’s not dumb to ask questions, more often than not it’s dumb not to!
4. Clean up your mess: Poor housekeeping creates hazards of all forms, from slips and falls to things falling on you. Take pride in what you do and where you do it and safety will follow.
5. Ignoring Safety Procedures: Believe it or not, safety procedures are there specifically to keep you safe. By purposefully ignoring them you can put yourself and others in serious danger. Remember that being “casual” about safety can lead to a casualty!
6. Focus on What You Are Doing: Sometimes we can get mentally distracted by everything going on in our lives like projects, homework, tests, work, relationships, and family, that we fail to pay attention to what we are actually doing. Not paying attention can easily and quickly put our safety at risk. Don’t become a statistic by taking your focus away from the task at hand. An accident can happen quicker than you think.
7. Work Your Plan: If you know something needs to be done then plan for it! Assess the where, when, why and the how for your task whether that is about a project at work, at school, or even at home. Being hasty to start a task and not thinking the process through can put you in harm’s way. Remember to plan your work, then work that plan!
Reminder - Ensure You Receive Your Paycheck with Direct Deposit
Due to the 49er Shops being closed Monday, December 24th through Tuesday, January 1st, please be aware that the Human Resources department will also be closed during this time. This means that even though the last pay day of the year will be Friday, December 28th, Human Resources will not be open.
We encourage you to enroll in Direct Deposit no later than 5pm on Monday, December 10th, 2012 to ensure that you will receive your final paycheck of the year on time. Paychecks will be mailed out Thursday, December 27th, 2012. For those who do not wish to enroll in Direct Deposit, these last of the year paychecks will be available to pick up on Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013, when the Human Resources department resumes operations.
