Vol. 1213, Issue 04

The inside track for Shops employees

Welcome, Tristy!
At last month’s Breakfast Management Meetings, we had a special guest in attendance who joined us before her official start date. Now that she’s officially joined the team at the Shops, we would like to welcome our new Director of Bookstore Services, Tristy Hillestad! For a photo from her first day with some Bookstore staff, click here! (Thanks, Steve Z. for the great picture!)

Tristy is SDSU alumni with a B.S. in Textiles—emphasis in Retail (and that’s South Dakota State University, not San Diego State as you may have guessed). She joins us here at Cal State Long Beach after 17 years with the University of Denver, where she was a buyer, manager, and eventually the University Bookstore Director, in addition to serving as the Director of Budget and Planning in the Division of Math and Sciences. Welcome to the Shops, Tristy!

Dorm Move-In Weekend
Thank you to everyone that supported the busy weekend before the first day of school! Over 400 orders were placed with the Dorm Delivery Program for Dorm Move-in on August 25th, and the Back to School VIP event on the 26th had live music, prizes, and plenty of food! Special thanks to Cyndi Farrington, Brian Fetterman, Melissa Devan, Steve Zimmerle, Kristin Bonetati and Juan Calvillo! Go Shops!

Steve shared one of his favorite moments of the weekend, where he was setting up a Wii for an interactive gaming display, and a young child was so excited to play Super Mario Brothers, that he voluntarily finished setting up the Wii for Steve while he stepped away to grab more items for the display. Young Wii-friend, if you end up coming to CSULB when you’re older, you may have a tech job in your future!

Help us help you
Ask your co-workers if they’re getting the Beach Bytes. If they aren’t, not only are they missing important announcement and fun events, but they could be missing out on many other emails from Human Resources.

If you know a Shops employee that isn’t receiving these emails, please have them contact HR to ensure they have the correct email address in their records.

Take a seat, friends.
At New Hire Orientation (in the Corporate session), we emphasize the importance of reinforcing the human aspect of our organization. It’s easy to forget that the people working next to us are students, parents, athletes, and not “just employees” of the Forty-Niner Shops. One way we share this side of the staff is with the Beach Breeze, another is with the Employee Hot Seat.

Please take a couple minutes to fill out the Hot Seat survey for yourself and send it to FNS-Communications@csulb.edu or contact Marlon directly at Marlon.Deleon@csulb.edu if you have any questions.

BB: Favorite Starbucks drink?
TH: Skinny Cinnamon Dolce Latte, Iced or Hot.
