Feel the summer breeze.

New Chef Manager
The Dining Services team has a new Chef Manager, so we would like to welcome Rachel Paghunasan aboard! “My love for cooking started [sitting] on a countertop in my home kitchen beside my father as we cooked traditional Filipino Food for my family.” Nearly two decades of experience in the culinary industry (including a degree on Hospitality Management from Cal Poly Pomona and culinary education at Johnson & Wales), her career has traveled through resorts, sports arenas, catering, and other universities such as Pitzer College and USC, but now she’s a part of the Shops family!
Chef Rachel (or just “Rache”) is a self-proclaimed mermaid and loves to go surfing, so what better place for her to be than The Beach? Surfer culture extends further onto the mainland past the sand, and she hopes to share some of that with us here at the Shops with some Shaka flying around. If you don’t know it by name, you may have seen it around: from a closed fist, extend your pinky and thumb in the popular “hang loose” hand sign. Learn more about the Shaka sign here and join this new wave!
A reminder about food safety
All Dining and C-Store employees must have current Food Handler Certification cards. If you do not, or have any questions about Food Handler Certification, please contact your manager.
Breakfast Meeting Thanks!
Thank you to everyone who attended the Breakfast Management Meetings August 13 and 14. A huge Go Shops! Thank you to our Dining Services hosts at Hillside, IT, Linda Welty, and everyone else who collaborated to coordinate and present those two days.
Lots of Love from Data Entry
If you know Chano L. Rios, Head Data Entry Clerk, you probably know that his ponytail is one of his trademark attributes. Recently, he got a haircut and donated nearly two feet of hair to Locks of Love, and this isn’t the first time he’s shared his hair with them. Growing up in the early 90s Grunge Era, he decided to let it grow out and donate 17 inches to the non-profit organization.
Even with the “shorter” hair, it’s still long enough to keep tied back, and he shares, “I will let it grow again and donate [it]. I don’t think I would know what to do with my hair if it was short.”
For everyone at The Beach...
Name Change for dining halls
The three residential dining halls are going through a facelift, and this first phase introduces new names (for two of the units) and crests (for all three)!
· Parkside (where Central Park Coffee House is) is Parkside

Better than a Genius
Congratulations are in order for a Shops team member who brings a little more to Beach Tech for Appleheads that come to the University Bookstore! Ross Bronzan recently earned the title of Apple Certified Macintosh Technician, and to put that in perspective, this is a step above Mac Genius level at Apple Stores.
So, if you know anyone on campus that needs some Mac help, send them to the Beach Tech booth on the second floor of the Bookstore!
Textbook Price Matching and Dorm Delivery
The University Bookstore is proud to announce the launce of two new and exciting programs: the Price Matching Guarantee and Dorm Delivery!
In providing multiple, convenient options for our students, the Bookstore will now be honoring prices from other, select vendors. Visit the Price Matching Guarantee website here for full details!
Know anyone moving into the dorms? If they order their books before August 23rd, their books will be ready for them at Dorm Move-In on Saturday, August 25th! For more information, visit the Textbook Delivery page here.
