The inside
track for Shops employees
Welcome, Provost
Donald Para!
President F. King Alexander made a statement last
week, regarding the newly appointed interim president of the university.
“California State University
Chancellor Timothy P. White today appointed Provost Donald Para to serve as
interim president for CSULB beginning July 1, 2013. We are very fortunate to
have Provost Para in this new capacity. I am confident Provost Para will continue
to advance our university priorities while working closely with our various
campus leadership groups.”
We at the Forty-Niner Shops hope
you find success and enjoyment in your new interim position at CSULB! Everyone,
let’s give him a big “Go Beach!”
Congratulations
Dining Services Director!
Melissa Devan, Director of the 49er Shops
Dining Services, has been nominated as one of the top 10 award winners for the
Premier Illuminating Excellence Award. This award acknowledges Premier
Foodservice Operators who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in the
foodservice field. Because it is such an
honor to be chosen in the top 10, Melissa will be awarded on stage at the
Culinary Creation Dinner during the Foodservice Forum portion of the Breakthroughs
Conference on Wednesday, June 12. The conference takes place in San Antonio, TX
from June 11-14.
Changes to
Pay Dates for Salaried Full-time Employees
Effective July 2013, all full-time salaried
employees (both exempt and non-exempt) will be merged to the bi-weekly payroll
schedule.
What does that mean? Under the new bi-weekly
payroll schedule, these employees will get paid every two weeks instead of the
twice a month schedule already established. The last pay date on the
semi-monthly schedule will be Friday, June 28th and the first pay
date on the bi-weekly schedule will be Thursday, July 11th, 2013.
For questions about this change, please
contact Suzanne O’Deegan in the Human Resources office at (562) 985-7385 or via
email at Suzanne.odeegan@csulb.edu.

It’s Summer Time – Stay Cool!
Did you know that exposure to hot
environments can lead to serious illnesses and injuries? Be aware of the risks
associated with hot environments and know how to protect yourself and others.
Knowing the difference between heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and heat cramps
can help you treat each one effectively.
Remember – stay cool to avoid getting these
conditions in the first place! When working in a hot environment, make use of
fans and drink plenty of water.

Heat
Exhaustion Occurs when the body responds to an
excessive loss of water and salt, usually through sweating. The symptoms of
Heat Exhaustion include:
• Rapid heart beat
• Heavy sweating
• Extreme weakness or fatigue
• Dizziness

First Aid -
To treat Heat Cramps, use these procedures:
1. Stop all activity and
sit in a cool place
