Vol. 1213, Issue 20

The inside track for Shops employees

We’re Almost There!
As the Spring semester comes to a close, the 49er Shops wants to thank all student and full time employees for their commitment and dedication to our organization throughout the 2012 – 2013 school year. This month, we have a few events scheduled to celebrate our superb staff.

We are hosting the annual Grad Luncheon on Thursday, May 9 from 11:30am – 1:30pm at the Chartroom. All graduating seniors of the 49er Shops are encouraged to attend this celebration in recognition for their accomplishments. Also, seven lucky graduates who attend will win a ring from Herff Jones! Please contact Linda Welty at X5-7700 for any questions and to RSVP for this event.

On Friday, May 10 the 49er Karat Awards and breakfast will be held from 8:00am - 9:30am in the Chartroom. The Karat Awards are an extension of the Bravo Awards Program, which is a way for the 49er Shops to recognize employees and managers for the work they do. All Karat Award winners have been invited to this wonderful event. If you have any questions, please contact Alma Smith at X5-8009.

These ten winners were randomly drawn from all the Bravo Awards submitted during the month of April. The winners each receive 4 unrestricted AMC movie tickets, 4 small popcorn vouchers, and 4 small drink vouchers. The monthly Bravo poster is in the hallway of the employee entrance by the elevator and HR.

May 2013 Safety Break

Sitting Too Much…Take Breaks For Wellness

Have you ever noticed a burst of positive energy after a workout?  Physical activity sets off physiological and psychological mechanisms that can improve your mood. Exercise releases hormones that can leave you feeling calmer and happier. Activity can also offer the opportunity to release stress, meet new people and boost self-confidence.

Studies suggest that sitting for hours on end -- regardless of calorie intake and exercise -- is harmful. This may be because immobile muscles lose the ability to metabolize fats and sugar as efficiently as they should, which could promote high cholesterol and up diabetes risk.

Do you have a stiff neck and back pain from sitting down all day? For many people, spending 12 hours or more a day sitting down is a normal part of life. However, a new study suggests that spending more time sitting down not only causes back pain and tense muscles, but increases your risk of getting type 2 diabetes, heart disease and obesity, even if you work out every day!

Don’t despair – though most people can’t avoid sitting down at work or while studying, taking short exercise breaks or ‘micro breaks’ every half hour are a great way to reduce time spent sitting down and fit some activity into your day.
Doing simple stretching exercises, like stretching your arms, neck, wrists and legs can help them not feel too stiff.
Taking short walks around your office or study area throughout the day, and participating in lunchtime walks, will help increase blood flow in your legs and arms and keep them from getting numb.

You can do many simple exercises in two minutes or less, so you can squeeze them in during the day. Remember, taking these small steps to reduce time sitting down goes a long way in improving your overall wellness.

For everyone at The Beach...

Finally, it’s Finals!
As the Spring semester comes to an end, many students are working hard to study for their upcoming final exams. As always, the Shops will have the Convenience stores open for all students looking for a meal, a quick caffeine boost, or even a toothbrush after waking up on the library floor. All convenience store hours will remain the same throughout the week of finals. To view store hours of operation for the month of May, please visit our Convenience Store Webpage.

As finals are completed, students may return rented and sell back their textbooks to the University Bookstore! The best time to sell back books is during finals week (May 13-17), when students can receive food vouchers and special promotions for returning their books.

The Shops’ Hot Seat

Each issue we’ll feature one of our employees, from the newest student employees to the senior staff members in any of our units and offices!

This Week: Kandis Jo Pogoda: Frontline Cashier, 49er Shops Bookstore

Beach Bytes: How long have you been with the Shops?
Kandis Jo Pogoda: I've been working for the bookstore since fall of 2012.

BB: What is the last thing you bought from the Shops?
KP: The last thing I bought from the Shops was a shirt and a hat.

BB: What is your major? or What is/was your favorite school subject?
KP: I recently graduated with my degree in Sociology, and a Spanish Minor.

BB: What is your favorite type of music? Your favorite song?
KP: I enjoy listening to multiple genres of music, but my favorites are hip hop, r&b, and house music.  My favorite song right now is "Girls Love Beyonce" by Drake. (Because I love Beyonce and Drake!) :]

BB: What three words describe you best?
KP: I am ambitious, adventurous, and caring.

BB: What are your favorite hobbies? If none, what do you do outside of work and/or school?
KP: I'm extremely active. In my free time, I like to dance, play sports, and work out.  I also really enjoy traveling and so far have been to 15 foreign countries.

BB: Are you a cat lover or a dog lover? Do you have any pets?
KP: DOG LOVER!!!! I have the cutest dogs in the world named Buckwheat and Kahlua<3

BB: What’s the best piece of advice someone has ever given you?
KP: My parents have always given me the best advice.  On an everyday basis, they encourage me to follow my dreams and to aim high.  They are always motivating me to be the best person I can be.  If it wasn't for their support and motivation, I doubt that I would have been able to graduate early, nor would I have had the courage to apply to be a Peace Corps Volunteer.

Have an announcement for the Shops family, and/or want to be featured in a future issue? Please email FNS-Communications@csulb.edu with “Beach Bytes” in the subject line!
